Fire engine stops dead

There was a bizarre scene in Southwest Philly about 10 a.m. yesterday, when Engine 69 was suddenly halted on its way to investigate a remote fire alarm that went off in a property on Mario Lanza Boulevard near Lindergh.
The culprit was the fire engine's drive shaft, which unexpectedly fell out of the vehicle, Executive Fire Chief Peter Crespo said.
Firefighters from Pipeline 40 scrambled to Mario Lanza Boulevard, where they found that the alarm had been tripped accidentally.
Crespo said Engine 69 was using a backup vechicle that was more than 20 years old ----- and had more than 100,000 miles on it ------- because its primary apparatus was undergoing maintenance work.
"This is not a frequent occurrence," Crespo said.  "If this had been a confirmed emergency ............. we could have had additional resources there within minutes."

Juneau, Alaska ------------------- Call Luke Skywalker for backup.
Police in Juneau took a call this week to check out a suspicious device spotted on the side of a road.
The Juneau Empire reports the first officer on the scene wasn't sure what to make of the object.  A dispatcher sent out a second officer with expertise in bombs.
The second officer determined that the device was a plastic light saber toy taped to a stick.  The laser swords were the preferred weapons of Jedi knights.

Salt Lake City ------------------- An 86-year-old Utah woman becme a first-time novelist by writing a steamy romance novel about a bored housewife.
Georgia Gorringe said it took her five years to write the tale of a woman who listens to talk radio and is turned on by the voice of a man she hears.
"And that voice on the radio, oh, he had a magic voice!  And it just turned her on!"  Gorringe said in an interview with KUTV.
Her adult daughter, Bobbie Posey, is proud of her mother's accomplishment but says she was taken aback by the amount of steaminess in the book.
"Sometimes I'm like, mother, how could you do that?  How can you write that?"  said Posey.  "But she did!"
Gorringe, who is a great-great grandmother, insists the story is all fiction, but her daughter isn't buying it.
"A lot of it is actually real-life," said Posey.  "I mean, we know who she's talking about."
